200 lumens per watt, white LED luminous efficiency innovation high

Researchers at the American optical society used nanomaterials to create white leds with a luminous efficiency of 105 lumens per watt, setting a new record. The researchers went further and made the luminous efficiency reach 200 lumens per watt, which could be used in home, office or television applications in the future.

At present, white leds on the market are mainly made by covering blue leds with a yellow phosphor. But because the spectrum of phosphorescent agents is so wide, the resulting white light is hard to adjust in detail. This time, the researchers combined blue leds with flexible lenses with nano-sized semiconductor particles called quantum dots. When a quantum dot is illuminated by blue light, it emits green and red light, which combines blue, green and red light into white light.

And phosphor, quantum dots smaller scope of radiation spectrum, generated color is consistent, so the injection of colored light and blue light when combined can produce high quality white light, moderate accurately presents the need to color optical properties.

In order to build new white LED, the researchers in the lens and the LED chip, add substances such as cadmium, zinc, selenium and quantum dots mixed solvent, and the use of a special lens made of silicone, besides can make the light transmission, can also ensure that the solvent in the lens will not leak out. White leds made from liquids are twice as effective as those made from solid film, the researchers said.

Responsible for leading the study Sedat Nizamoglu said that emits 200 lumens per watt LED light source, can effectively reduce half of the global lighting electricity, greenhouse gas emissions can reduce 200 million tons, and new LED easy manufacturing, low cost, is beneficial to future production. The color light emitted by quantum dots can be changed by increasing the volume of semiconductor particles, and can also change the density of quantum dots. The next step for the researchers is to switch to cadmium-free solvents, which can be environmentally friendly as well as keep leds glowing efficiently.
